Richard Florida - who’s your city, the creative class..

gawds i love the internet. Last night I was up at some ridiculous time of the morning and heard this interview on BBC World News. Basically this guy is talking about the value of cities, and how suburbanization seems to be turning back on itself. One point I found particularly interesting was the assertion that most folks who work for Google live in cities, not in the suburbs. He had some interesting things to say about Detroit, starting about 1/3 of the way in. “detroit was destroyed by an automotive leadership class”, “a management mindset that said we know it all”. Yup, that’s how I remember it, too. The page that has the interview is http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/podcasts/worldbiz/ but, recognizing that this information will very soon be obsolete, here’s the blurb and link directly to the mp3 of the interview:

GlobalBiz: Richard Florida: Tx: 16 Sept 08 Peter Day interviews Richard Florida, Head of the Martin Prosperity Institute, Rotman Business School, Toronto. An interview on the new shape of cities, what companies do not understand, and why not. Producer: Richard Berenger Editor: Stephen Chilcott http://downloads.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/radio/worldbiz/worldbiz_20080916-0006a.mp3

I think i wanna learn more about this guy and what he’s talking about. Wikipedia entry on Richard Florida
