Flies, Mushrooms and Fairies…
I’ve been meaning to write about a few things that are of note, but keep getting sidetracked, or i don’t think i I have enough time to do the subject properly… I have a couple of tools I am using to post to LJ on occasion, one is a browser called “Flock” which is supposed to be good for “social networking”… well one of its features is a “blog posting window” which can be rigged to let you post to several different blogs at will. Another is a little app on my PDA. Both of these allow me to save a post without sending it. The web client (at least the cheapo subscription) doesn’t really let you save drafts. about the best you can do is post it anyways, and private. anyways, either because it’s the end of summer or because I have been slack about picking up the cat’s carnage, we have been invaded by flies. They don’t bite, but they’re certainly annoying. I’ve killed 20 in a session. Very satisfying, just sit there next to the coffee table, wait for one to land, then thwap It would be a lot more satisfying if i wasn’t awaked each morning with flies landing on me. Apparently a memo has gone out to the cats “be sure to bring your kills into the kitchen or hallway by the bathroom for full credit on your kills. And that includes grasshoppers” We usually know who does what kills: if it’s dismembered, it was oom. If it’s a mouse or vole and it’s still pretty much intact, it’s probably Therion. And if it’s a grasshopper, it’s Babalon. I am so glad my cats love me so much. Enough with the beheaded rabbits outside the bedroom door already. My part of Colorado is having a very wet late summer/early fall. We’ve had several inches of rain several times in the last month. Supposedly some of it is the last gasps of Gustav. My yard is filled with mushrooms. Not just a few, but it’s becoming hard to walk barefoot at night without risking squishing them. According to our research in the Audobon Mushroom Guide, these are “fairy ring” mushrooms. And fairies… this part takes a little bit of back story. About 3-4 weeks ago, michelle lost her wallet. we looked all over the place, couldn’t find it. A week later, mine went missing after I went to the gas station for smokes, came home.. by the end of the day of working from home, I couldn’t find it. Very frustrating, we were living on cash only for a couple weeks. Life’s a lot different when you physically feel your spending happening as you hand bills over for gas, food, etc. I understand those who prefer to have all their life work that way. We know a lot of people who work with various kinds of energies.. SOme work with elemental energies, some lunar magick, some other spirits, and some work with fairies. Fairies have had a bit of a PR job in the last couple years. For most of us, fairies meant tinkerbell. But as you look at the stories from a more adult perspective, fairies are not always entirely friendly and benevolent. But they do like a prank. Some folks have suggested that if you don’t appease the fairies that might live around you, they get peckish and do things like steal keys, wallets, etc. Now superstitious behavior isn’t the most scientific way to live, but it’s certainly understandable, even on a mathematical basis, if the behavior doesn’t cost that much (http://www.newscientist.com/channel/being-human/dn14694-superstitions-evolved-to-help-us-survive.html) So partially as a whimsy, partially as a “can’t hurt”, we do certain things to “appease the fairies”. Usually that means that when we rack mead or wine, we pour leavings on the ground as an offering. Why? i am not entirely sure, but one thing that occurs to me is that alcohol is not something that naturally occurs in the fairie’s world as there aren’t any plants that produce alcohol directly - they have to get it from us.) So… i had been thinking the last couple weeks that maybe these lost wallets most likely around the house could be related to the fairies not being appeased. I realized we hadn’t racked mead or wine in a while and that we needed to do so, and that would be a chance to spill some leavings on the yard. We did a few carboys a couple weeks ago, and still had two to go this weekend. On Saturday morning, we racked those, and when I poured the second jug on the ground, I said, out loud, “hey fairies, can we have our wallets back now?” and then i forgot about it. Went about my day, did mass saturday night with first-time jitters beinc as this was my first post-ordinal mass. We had been alerted that some brethren were coming through from out of town, so we volunteered to put them up.. (hi angie and !!!) When we got home we stayed up kinda late talking. we talked about a whole bunch of things, including why we have a vinyl Andromalius sticker on our window. After having done the mass, I was a bit hyper. I am also self-conscious of the disarray of my house when i have company. At one point, I started “futzing” with the bottles on the porch that had fallen on their sides. As I was doing this, I found this leather thing.. which turned out to be michelle’s wallet. Don’t know if there’s anything to this fairy thing, but i think i’m gonna keep appeasing them. It seems to help.
