Yurt plans and progress..

This is essentially what I am building: http://www.pbm.comyu/~lindahl/articles/yurt/ My plan for the first cut is to make the sides and top out of PVC sheeting I picked up a couple years ago when I was thinking of building a dome. This will allow me to forego the biggest expense (other than the wood) of the whole project. I’ll also get some interesting experience using PVC cement to hold pieces of sheeting together instead of sewing. So far, I have the rings cut for the center, made of external-grade 1/2” sign plywood. I’ve bought some 1x3 so far and I am building the slots described in that document. I’ve made the rings 31” big around, and it looks like i’ll be getting 35 or 36 spokes out of it. Michelle and I put about half dozen of these on (after a couple of false starts). I’m using drywall screws and finding that they often split the 1x3, so now I’m predrilling the holes with a 1/8 bit. The next step after that will be to start building the sides. Using a table saw recently snagged during ‘s move, i’ll take 2x4s and rip them down to 2x1/2”x8’ and start drilling a lot of holes.
