Nerdy things…
as you can see, I’ve got my twitxer to livejournal thingie working again. I had it working on a running linux machine, but any permanent installs I had a month ago are now gone for various reasons. oh, and FWIW i don’t like Ubuntu 8, i wasted some 12 hours trying to install it on one box.
I’ve been playing with Knoppix Live CD in the meantime. Live CDs let you run linux on your computer without having to write to the hard drive, nay, it doesnt even require the system to have a hard drive at all. One of my development machines is about to be set up in the basement with just such a setup. Along wiht the bootable CD will be a flash drive that holds some configuration stuff like the commands to start Apache, Mysql, SSH so I can get into it from outside.
To this end, I ran a 50’ CAT5 cable down through the pit into my basement which is about to become my “lights out” data center, a safe place to hide my noisy machines. Except this one, the Macintosh Xserv which gets louder when it is hot. It’s hot in the house, and it sounds like I am sitting next to a jet. But MacOSX is cool.
Along with my other experiments wiht knoppix is my new bootable USB flash drive with knoppix installed on it. I am attempting to configure this flash drive as a “home away from home” machine, so I can do my personal stuff on it from anyone’s computer (that can boot USB drives - a relatively recent development in BIOS). To this end, I have transferred my twitxr poster script, and I have also written a script to selectively post pictures from either camera or cel-phone cam provided I take the Micro-SD card out of the phone. it’s a lot quicker than posting them directly from the phone since I have a real keyboard to type on, and I can also review the pics on a bigger screen than 3” x 3”.
All in all some good, clean nerdy fun. I hope you enjoy it. I am.
