the things we do for net..
My internet comes to me by point to point microwave transmission from
my ISP, mesanetworks.net. This means I have to have an unobstructed line
of sight view from my antenna (which lives on top of my house) and the
ISP’s antenna a mile or so away. Problem is that there is a hedgerow
which has a whole bunch of big (50 year old) RUssian Olive trees (which
the state of Colorado considers to be a noxious weed, I am told,
supposely because of its ability to spread and suck up a lot of water)
The last week my internet conectivity has been flaky. This morning it
did not work at all. I decided to take matters into my own hands with a
bow saw. taking down several medium sized (4-6 inch diameter) branches
from the top of these things. Oh, by the way, russian olives have thorns
and sharp bark. This his what my arm looked like after rinsed
them off… (note the scar on the left arm just below the elbow, the
result of an accident in 1989 in which I was cutting down a tree and the
chain saw jumped out of my hand - I call it my chainsaw bite). All this
cutting is hand bow-saw cutting. I’m not used to such exertions and my
arms felt rubbery when I was done. When I went back into the house, I
had network connectivity. Unfortunately, I didn’t check before I went
in, so I don’t know if my efforts did anything to solve this
problem I had today. |
… But I didn’t use a chain saw this time
