We started some new wine projects over the weekend. The big new novelty is sake, aka rice wine usually made in Japan. I was sorta hesitant at first because it’s hard to find good sake, so it must be really hard to make it. The process of making it is kinda interesting. The “sake kit” from the store included 4 pages of instructions and a packet of “mold seeds”. We made a pound (dry weight) of steamed rice and sprinkled the “seeds” on it in a cheescloth-covered jar until it started to get fuzzy, then added it to three pounds (dry weight) of more steamed rice and water and yeast. This is what it looked like just afterwards. By morning, the rice had soaked up all the extra water and we stirred it. Within a couple days, we’re told, we should have a “nice sake smell” coming out of it. But we’ll see. The rice is just jasmine rice from the grocery store and there was no “polishing” of the rice grains involved. Oh and I got my daily twitxr script to automatically do it all by itself. Anyone care to explain why it didnt work to put the script in /etc/cron.daily anyways? I ended up creating a “traditional” crontab for my personal account. But expect more pics here in the near future, and they won’t all be boring pictures of my back yard.
