A Quiet Proposal

Boingboing had an article recently about an amusement park where they were having people confiscate PDAs from people at the amusment park. Oh scandal!! I decided to check it out because something didn’t smell right, it sounded like something i’d Thought About a few times. This is the first real thing in that direction I’ve seen http://www.altontowersresort.co.uk/index.php?news=68 “the Alton Towers Resort will be piloting a “PDA Free Zone” during May Half Term (May 25th – June 1st inclusive), to encourage parents to disconnect from the office and reconnect fully with their families. PDA police will be onsite to enforce the ban and any adult caught using a PDA whilst at the Resort will be asked to report to one of five “PDA Drop Off Zones” where they can safely leave their PDA’s for the day. If the scheme is successful, it will be introduced full time. I would say that the real culprit isn’t necessarily “PDA”s, because that is kinda vague, but really, how interesting are these toys without the life-giving internet? I’ve said for years that there is something to a restaurant, for instance, that was cell-proof. Make the whole building a big faraday cage, shielded from RF. Go ahead, leave your cel phone on. It’s not going to work in here. No outside interruptions, except perhaps the ones we let in. We like it quiet. and if it is that damned important, maybe, for an extra charge, we can have someone watch your phone, bringing you a big clunky phone as a notice that your phone rang and you need to go to the door.
