job status..
job status..
There’ve been some new developments at work. I’ve been a little quiet about some of them because i’ve not wanted to jinx stuff.
A couple months ago I wrote about getting a new position, that i was gonna be the local IT dude. People congratulated me, I started trying to get over to start getting some of the training for the position. But there was pullback from the Support dept because frankly they still needed me.
Eventually i found out, around xmas or so, that my new IT job wasn’t gonna happen because corporate decided that we didn’t need a local IT resource, so there was no budget for one. hahah.. fooled again.
If it wasn’t for hearing the word “recession” a lot, I’d have been out of there in a heartbeat after all the rest of the crap I’ve been through. But I haven’t got any solid alternatives online, so I’ve been slogging along. It’s reall time for me to move on, i’m going on three years doing exactly the same job and that’s a record for me (to be essentially in the same chair doing the same thing)
SO.. a few weeks ago my boss’s boss came up to me after meeting with some visiting exectutives from the new corporate overlords who were basically telling everyone in the company where they stood in the biger scheme of things. what seems to have happened is that the support organization is being put with the rest of the support organization of RedPrairie, development will report up trough software development, etc, lots of cross training, and apparently they have no problem with people being distributed, presumably with a certain amount of travel flexibility.
During these meetings, boss**2 gets to sit in for some meetings, and comes out wanting me to give him a resume showing my IT experience, he might have a position for me that could be a fit. I gave him the resume monday morning, on tuesday he catches me in the hallway to tell me that this manager wants to talk to me, that he’s coming into town next week, but we talked and he pretty much put it up to me, but the catch was that the job would be up to 70% travel. After some consultations with Michelle, i declded to go for it.
That was all last week. Since then I’ve been waiting for Brian (new boss) to come to town to meet him. Well today was that day. I ran into the bosses in the coffee room (been indulging that demon the last couple days) and this morning Brian caught me in the hallway wanting to know if I knew much about routers and firewalls and such. I said i was ok, not great but i could learn anything.
So now it seems that I’m in a whole new kind of limbo. I’ve got about three possibilities: 1. stay with the support gig i’ve been with: not real likely, but it’s happened before 2. go with the systems integration specialist gig: traveling operating system specialist, installing stuff on computers and traveling a lot 3. networking position which would need me to come up to speed on cisco routers pretty darned quick.
To answer the questions “when do you start your new job?” and “what will you be doing?” I stil have to answer..
I don’t know exactly. But it’s gonna change.
