review of the new Bladerunner
New bladerunner.. I remember when this came out 25 yeara ago. It was fresh on the heels of Alien and I rememberi8ng my dad making some comment about how Ridley Scott always seems to have his sets be really rainy. SO this is like the 3rd or 4th version of this movie that he’s put out. The 5-disck box set that was recently released has all of the versions, including the original 1982 version that had a harrison ford voice-oer describing some back story. I think i was the only person who preferred that device, I’d not understand as much as i do if i’d never heard it. So this one has more expository material. For Instance, when Brian is telling Deckard about the replicant named Leon, he adds that Leon’s job was to move 400 lb atomic loads, that the only way to stop him was to kil him. Thre are other weird deletions. I remember that part of the scene at the sidewalk noodle place, he makes a big deal about “two” like double order, i guess. now he’s just makin sure he gets his noodles. I think I finally understood the mania that replicants have about photos. I hope it’s not a spoiler to mention something about whether Deckerd is a replicant, but if he is, how come he’s allowed to be on Earth? I like this version, but it makes me want to run back and see one of the older versions.
Speaking of older versions, I realized that the multiple version of something is a recurring theme for me.. My favorite playlist I’ve ever created for my ipod is simply 5 different versions of the song “First We take Manhattan” by Leonard Cohen. I have a version by REM, Leonard COhen, Joe Cocker, Jennifer Warnes, and some heavy metal band named Sirenia. The radio show “Bob’s Slacktime Funhouse” produced by WREK in Atlanta, GA (yes, Kara, you can get a local broadcast of the hour of slack in Atlanta from GA Tech) has often featured shows where mostly all they do is play many different covers of Stairway to Heaven, for instance. I think i have a 3 hour webcast that is all version of Zip-a-dee Doo-dah. That could be considered torture, but not quite as bad as waterboarding. I grabbed a pile of Vangelis music.. when I created a smart playlist which just looked for the word “blade” in the song name, i got two versions of the bladerunner ent titles, and three dance remixes of the same. I decided to call this playlist “BladeRuiner”. I realized that Bladerunner might be a good double feature with “Dark City” on a theme of “your memories aren’t as real as you thought they were”
I’ve learned recently of another tv show which I am currently acquiring. It’s called “Penn & Teller’s Bullshit”. It’s currently on Showtime in its 5th season. One episode i’ve been able to watch was “End of the WOrld” (of course!!!) One of the best parts was when teller had this stack of cue cards with years and predictors of when the end of the world was going to be (like a few dozen dates in the last 2000 years) ANd we’re still here.
