SURGE!!!

Ok, so now that i’ve posted about my Michigan trip, i want to rant about somethign that’s been bothering me for months. This is the overuse of the word “surge”, courtesy of our idiot-in-chief.

Ever since he announced that we were going to have a “surge” of troops to stand in the line of fire in Iraq, it seems that the media has adopted this word to describe all kinds of other activities. Surges in foreclosures, surges in everything. Anyone else as annoyed at this as me? Does anyone know a good way to show how much a given word is being used in a dataset (say, the NY times or some other online newspaper)?
