another post from yesterday…
Last night we ended up at a restaurant here on base. One of the items on the menu was a “sumo burger”, which either costs $24.95 or it’s free if you can eat the whole thing. Dalton decided to try to eat it, but didn’t make it.
today was a little less rigorous than yesterday. After chilling in the room much of the morning, we ventured out into the world to see Spiderman3. Seeing a movie here is different than home, as is many other things it seems. It’s much more complicated. When you buy movie tickets, you don’t just get a general admission ticket, they actualy assign seats to you when you buy your tickets, and the price of your seat is a function of where you are sitting. Oh yeah, and like many other things, it’s more expensive: getting the three of us in cost about $50. There was a choice between seeing this movie in English (with subtitles) or Japanese.
They didn’t allow us into the theater until the time stated, and we still had to sit through a number of previews, all in Japanese, for upcoming movies.
The movie itself.. um.. I don’t know about anyone else, but I found it reall silly, disjointed nearly incomprehensible plot.
Afterwards we hung out at the mall (www.vinawalk.co.jp). When it came time to eat, we ended up standing in front of either a sushi bar or an Outback steakhouse. For some reason, there was some choice between them. We decided to go to the sushi place. This place had sushi chefs in the middle with this conveyer belt that brought the bits of sushi in front of all the tables. You just grab what you want as it goes by. The price of the sushi is set by the kind of plate, so when you’re done, they just add up the prices of the plates that you took and add them up.
The irony of Japan is this: while it cost us $50 or so to se ethe movie, we sat there and ate a bunch of sushi until we were all full and it cost only about $36.
I can’t shake this recurring deja vu.. It feels like i’ve lived all this before.
As I’m posting this it is tuesday morning, although I wrote the rest of this post in the middle of the night last nite..
