Community Doesn’t Scale

This article talks about how online communities get lame over time. I found this interesting in light of some communities I participate in, particularly the drumcircles@yahoogroups list, which has about 1400 members now. I’ve had a few conversations with my carpool partner about the direction of this list. It’s important to me that the list be unmoderated, that people be able to discuss what they want. Originally this list was an alternative place to discuss drumming that wasn’t a specific ethnic tradtion, and to announce drumcircle events in one’s area. This latter was included because the alternative venue, djembe-l, didn’t allow these kinds of posts. The list goes through various stages over time as new people jump on, learn the culture, etc. I found this article to give an interesting perspective on the ongoing viability of online communities.
