RIF’d!!! er, no, waitasec.. not yet.

Yesterday, I took the day off to take sophiavivienne to the doctor. I sent out a note saying I would be out for the day. So far, so good. But I got a call from a coworker asking if I was coming in. (fast forward: turns out I misspelled the domain name, so the email didn’t go out) I explained what was up, and moved on. I’ll not say much about the doctor visit cuz it’s not my story. After that, we decided to call the insurance company about the final settlement for Michelle’s injuries. Remember that nasty accident a year and a half ago? We have had healtcare providers chasing us for their money or being very very patient for all this time. The bad news about that is they didn’t allow anything for Michelle’s dislocation, so she got about the same amount as I did. We decided to cash it at the bank it was drawn on, so as to get it into our bank as soon as possible (Our bank, Compass Bank, has this funny habit of holding checks for as much as 10 days if it is big enough. No fun when you need that money badly. On the way downtown, I got a call from Solemnus that there was a mandatory meeting, that I should call in early because it was going to start at 4:15 SHARP. He gave me the access numbers. We got the guitar out of the pawn shop and gave compass our stack of cash. I think some business owners might have sent along an armed guard to protect amounts like we were carrying. They’d have sent two employees almost for sure. Easy come, easy go, much of this will pay for arears doctor bills. We’d just left Josie’s Pawn Shop when I had to call in. I put in my name, and then waited.. at 4:18 I started to wonder what “Sharp” was suppose to mean. A few minutes later, someone opened the call, and a whole bunch of beep-beeps chimed in. It’s company internal, so I’ll just say that a project was cut and a whole raft of developers lost their jobs. Oh, and Support lost a couple of people, but these didn’t have significant customer contact. Basically, if you were on this call, you still had a job. Execs took a pay cut, and high wage-earners were also cut about a one-year’s raise. To be continued..
