Burnt Weeny Zandwich
Kinda mixed bag. The first and last songs coulda been on “Cruising with
Ruben and the Jets”, and the rest coulda been on Uncle Meat. I’m not
really qualified to do any kind of detailed musical deconstruction of a
lot of the Zappa instrumental jams, but they cross boundaries of avant
garde contemporary music, jazz, and early progressive rock. “Little
House I Used To Live In” is the highlight, in my opinion. This is a
typical collage that combines live guitar solos melded onto some studio
work, including some stunning violin work by Jean Luc Ponty. This song
features prominently as the first track of “Live at the Fillmore East”,
so there’s this one part where my mind puts in the word “Mud Shark”.
(“yes, folks you heard that right, the secret word of the night is ‘mud
shark’!” starts the comedic play from the fillmore east album featuring
Flo & Eddie of the Turtles). “Fillmore East” was where he really
started to come into his own doing “comedy music”, which is just as
thick on virtuoso musicianship as it is with satire and comedy. I
included a bit larger than usual album picture cuz this is just so
bizarre.
