Who Wants Jelly Donuts?
Who Wants Jelly Donuts?
WWJD?
Can’t find these round here cuz they’re apparently a midwest region thing. Anyways, it’s this Polish tradition for Fat Tuesday that took hold mainstream in Detroit, where I’m from. The theory, I guess, is that since you’re supposed to renounce stuff on Ash Wednesday, then you might as well fill up on decadence the day before.
SO they make these things called paczki (pronounced “poonch-key”) which are big jelly donuts with glaze on them.
Here’s something about them. Hamtramck is a little village in the middle of detroit, but it’s separate. Very Polish part of town. This one has a picture of a punchkey, as well as places in detroit to get them http://hamtramckstar.com/index.php/2006/02/08/where_to_get_your_paczki#c4980 and this page as a NPR feature about paczki’s that aired last year http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=4490722
