I started as a data entry clerk in September 1981. I’d worked a couple retail places, washing dishes at a couple of restaurants. <insert Arnold Drugs and Perry’s link here> There was a woman with whom I’d worked at Perry’s that I ran into on campus. She was telling me all about this job she had gotten as a computer operator. I was happy for her, but as i walked away I thought that if she could get a job like that, I could get a job like that.

There was a job placement office in the same building as the counselor’s area. I went up there, and looked through their binders full of jobs and found this job for data entry.

The gig was when they sold a system to a new credit union, someone had to take a printout of the customer’s chart of acconts and reproduce them into our general ledger section. They had built up a backlog and so
