history

Chuck and I met while I was in the eighth grade. I was working in the school library. He was someone who spent a bunch of time in the library. We started talking, turned out he was playing in a local theater production of Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night, or what you will”. I think he played a character named Fabian?

We ended up in the same Geometry class when I was 10th grade, he was 11th grade, with Mr Horner. We had some hijinks, including things like rearranging the tables and chairs in the room. We had a running gag about Zorro, leaving a Z in some way.

Mr Horner had a congenital deformity with his hands and feet, but he was a brilliant teacher. At one point we pooled a few dollars and got him a chalk holder so it would be easier for him to write on the board.

He introduced me to occultism, non-Catholic Christianity (was a fan of the writing of CS Lewis. ,

He introduced me to a lot of music: jazz in general, Pink Floyd and Frank Zappa in particular. .

Chuck dated Lori Blight for a while in High School.

After high school, he went to Oakkland Community College and studied for a mental health associates, later transferred to Oakland University.

Chuck was the first friend I ever had who had parents who had divorced. When I met him, he was involved with AA, while we were still in high school. I’d never met anyone like that before.

I kind of followed him in many ways - he introduced me to Personal Dynamics, Inc in Toledo, Ohio. They had something called the Personal Effectiveness seminar, which was essentially a licensed version of the Mind Dynamics course taught by Alexander Everett. PES taught a certain kind of meditaiton using the colors of the rainbow, and included creating a mental “workshop” where a student did certain kinds of work, including remote healing. PDI brought Alexander in to teach another class called Inward Bound.

Chuck’s mom was killed in a car accident by a drunk driver.

He eventually married a lady named April. At this time, he was a pretty sincere Christian, and had several kids.

I made a stained glass piece for him once that had a Christian theme, chalice, host, wheat and grapes.

My father held a grudge against him, as far as Dad was concerned, my meeting him was when I went astray.

Chuck later became a Mason. He lost his wife a couple years ago, and announced on Facebook that he had early stages of dementia.

During the PDI days, we did a few hitchhiking trips together, often to Toledo.

How did we meet

Junior High School, I worked in the library. He was in the library a lot doing reading. My first real connection had to do with him being in a local production of First Night by William Shakespeare.
