Frank Zappa & Linda Ronstadt – 1967 - Remington Electric Razor.

“In 1967, we were living in New York, and I got a request from an advertising agency. See, I did one commercial in ‘67 for Luden’s Cough Drops, and that got an award. It got a CLIO for the best music in a commercial in ’67. Then I got this request from Remington. They were looking for some kind of a ’new sound’ for their commercials. (laughter) So, Linda Ronstadt happened to be managed by Herb Cohen, who was our manager at the time, and they supplied me with this advertising copy, and they wanted music for it. So, Ian Underwood and I put together this track, and Linda did the vocal on top of it, and we made a demo. They paid a thousand dollars for the demo, and that was the last I ever heard from ’em. They didn’t like what I did.”

The drummer in the 1967 Remington Electric Razor commercial was Hal Blaine. Blaine was a legendary session drummer who played on thousands of hit records throughout the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. He was a member of the Wrecking Crew, a group of studio musicians who played on many of the most popular records of the era.

Blaine was known for his impeccable timing and versatility. He could play in any style, from rock and roll to jazz to pop. He was also a great showman, and he often improvised drum solos that were as entertaining as they were impressive.

Blaine’s drumming on the Remington Electric Razor commercial is one of his most famous performances. His work on the track is both funny and catchy, and it perfectly complements Zappa and Ronstadt’s vocals. Blaine’s drumming is one of the reasons why the commercial is such a memorable piece of early television advertising.
