Family recipe poppy seed rolls
Obligatory story: My Aunt Joanne used to make these for any gathering. She held the recipe close, always refusing to share it, I suspect because she sold them to people sometimes.
This isn’t her recipe. This is my mom’s reverse engineering of it.
Poppy Seed Rolls
Place in large bowl:
- 2 eggs (beat well)
- ¼ c. sugar
- 2 tsp salt
- 1/3 c. oil
Combine in separate bowl:
- ½ c warm water
- 2 envelopes yeast
Add to mixture in large bowl:
- 1 c hot water (from tap)
Then add yeast mixture
- Add: 5 c. flour
Stir mixture well with spoon (kneading is not necessary).
Let mixture raise till doubled.
Roll dough out on floured board.
Cut circles with glass.
Take circles of dough & roll into lengths approx. ½ width of baking dish to be used.
Roll these strips in melted butter & place in baking dish. (approx. 36-40 rolls needed to fill 9x12” pan).
Let rolls raise until doubled.
Bake at 325 for 30 minutes.
