Sleeping on a bed is terrible
I’ve been sleeping in a $10 hammock at home for 6 years now.
I’ve slept on beds before and during this period. I’ve tried multiple mattresses and no matter the firmness, material or price they all suck.
Hammocks are superior.
They are ergonomic, cheap and comfy.
Neutral sleeping position by design, improved posture, less pressure on your shoulders, hips and back.
You won’t turn and toss much.
You can sleep on your side, it’s a myth that you can not.
If you’re a fetal positioner, it feels like a mother’s caring womb.
You won’t wake up drenched in backsweat.
In the summer you’re a floating taco.
In the winter you’re a floating burrito.
You don’t need a quilt indoors (insulation under hammocks to prevent cold butt).
The only thing I can’t do is sleeping on my stomach but I don’t even feel the need to do it anymore.
They are not good for sleeping together and making love, but you can get a sofa bed for that. Boom, two birds one stone. That’s one less expensive furniture. It’s a fair deal.
Edit: You don’t sleep like a banana in a hammock! That is a misconception, you have to lie at an angle. Also how you set up your hammock matters a lot, there are calculators for that: height, rope length, hammock size, etc. But you do the same with beds when you assemble them.
Edit2: I can’t keep up with the comments but I did answer the most common ones!
For you horndogs: cmon you can have sex on a sofa for example, surprise your partners with a bit of creativity!

Not for everyone, to be sure. Waterbeds were a thing once upon a time. I’m not sure what i would do if i wanted to sleep next to someone all the time, but for now this is what I do. My thrashing around in bed with my last shared bed partner is what led me to trying this. CPAP helps, but as others have pointed out, I often wake up in the same position I went to sleep in.

My father, an avid camper and outdoorsman, survived a nearly fatal car crash many years ago and it messed up his back to the point of no return. Daily chronic pain and often frequent immobility from poor ergonomics while sleeping. He ended up buying a hammock for camping stuff (though it s nice one, a few hundred bucks custom made rather than a $10 one like OP, but no hate!) and has been sleeping in it every single day since then. He reports zero pain after switching and now seems fully normal besides his age. He even figured out how to hook it up to sleep in his van when he’s on the road. He basically never sleeps in beds anymore and when he does he can barely move the next morning. Tried it once and I think I might switch.

There should be more research on sleeping in hammocks for sure. It feels good to sleep in one, even though it’s not a solution that fits all people there’s probably medical benefits for specific cases based on your dad’s experience.

I tried it once and yeah… it’s actually really good. I have constant back issues due to terrible posture, and I woke up feeling amazing. I want to take a whole week to try it out sometime, so I can get a better perspective if it’s really that much better.

I was working from home. Had to pee while on a call. Peed into my empty ensure bottle. Put the lid back on. Work got busy. I got thirsty. Forgot what I had done. Took a huge gulp out of that ensure bottle. The ensure bottle that had now been sitting for hours. Immediately throw up all over my computer , keyboard, desk, floor, wall and self.
I will never pee into a bottle ever again.

Can’t speak for OP, but I have a futon pad (folded out of the way most of the time) with a fresh sheet gets the job done when the occasion has arison. Clip the hammock to the side makes a big space in the middle of the room. Getting up off the floor is a challenge for 60+ year old folks like us.
Her bed usually has stuff on it, so it hasn’t come up for me to stay at her place so far. Depression is a hell of a thing.

I can’t judge you because I slept on a giant 7’ long bean bag for 2 years in college and it’s the best I’ve ever slept. This was when I was a stomach sleeper and something about starfishing sprawled on a giant beanbag felt like sleeping on a cloud to me. Typical beds aren’t for everyone 😂
Edit to change inches to feet, thanks to the kind commenter who pointed that typo out 😂😂😂

Reply Share

This comment just reminded me that:
In The Sims 2, toddlers were annoying to keep in cribs because they needed an adult to get them in and out of bed, so instead of cribs, I’d get my toddlers dog beds.
So, based on that experience, it seems like a great idea.
Reply Share
• 6h ago
Legitimately a real toddler would prefer a dog bed
Reply Share
• 6h ago
Honestly, it’s probably safer anyway: if they roll out, they won’t fall far.
And if there’s a dog in the house, cuddle buddy!
Sounds good to me!
When my cat was recovering from surgery, she couldn’t jump on or off the furniture but she likes to sleep on my pillow, so I just piled up a nest of blankets and slept on the floor with her, lol.
That’s kinda like sleeping in a cat bed?
I was an adult though, lol.

I 100% agree and think that sounds delightful. Though my cats turn my whole bed into a cat bed by deciding to lay on my pillow and put their butts on my head…

Beanbags to me are for stomach sleeping lmao Otherwise if you sleep on it butt to beanbag you’re right it feels like getting eaten by quick sand Stomach sleeping feels more like sleeping on a cloud, the beads inside just settle better
Then how you get up is you just body roll left or right off the beanbag depending on the angle, roll towards the lowest side 😂

Kinda off topic but in college I roomed with a guy who grew up extremely poor with a mentally ill single mother. Our apartment had beds for each of us but he could never get comfortable in his and I usually found him sleeping on the floor with just a comforter over him because “that’s how he always slept at home.” Pretty sad.

Whenever I go see my father-in-law, we are camping in the woods and my husband invested in hammocks for each of us. Before that we slept on a crappy mattress in a small cabin loft or a mattress pad in a tent. Since we got the hammocks, it’s a vacation I now look forward to. I sleep amazing every night, and it’s probably something to do with me getting high every day when I’m forced into the woods, but part of it is definitely the hammock. They really are great when you get used to them.

How does it improve posture? I can’t see it doing anything except worsen my shrimp posture.
Reply Share
• 1m ago
Having proper tension so it’s not a deep curve is important. I use a couple lengths of chain between the wall and my usual hammock. I have a few that I can choose from. A couple are canvas (breathe nicely in the summer) ripstop nylon (easier to adjust blankets beneath me) and one that has spreader bars which is like a net. That one is nice because I can sleep with all sides of me exposed when it’s hot, but it takes up more space than the others. Getting arranged with blankets on that one is a little trickier because of friction between blanket and rope. A sleeping bag would probably work well but i haven’t tried that.
Reply Share
• 6h ago
I think the best way to describe it is by comparing it to memory foam. Your body settles into an “ideal” position so pressure is allievated on your shoulders and back.
As you can see from other comments, it is not for everyone though and fixing your posture problems should be probably done by proper physiotherapy first.
Reply Share
• 2h ago
It doesn’t. It’s like sitting 8 hours in a really soft office chair instead of one with a better supported back. It will just fuck you up after a long time. Only reason it feels comfortable to OP is because they are used to the feeling.

My boyfriend did this our freshman year of college. He put his bed on the top rung of the frame and hung a hammock up underneath. I initially made fun of him for it, but before we left for winter break he got me a hammock and set up my bed the same way. It was really nice! I had a little private cave that rocked me to sleep. I haven’t thought about that in years.

There are lots of options. The traditional two-point connection can be tricky indoors, but it can be stretched between two walls. There are some that hang from a single point and can be removed except for the chain for proper height (no really, why do you really have chains hanging from your bedroom ceiling, hmmm?)
For the latter, I recommend checking out crysalis hammocks https://www.crysalishammocks.com/ which was my first sleeping hammock. If you lay on it, put your feet on the edge, it stretches out to long enough for your whole body, you’re flat, and I don’t even really need a pillow on that one. I usually use the two-point one, however.
I put up a couple of pics from my room on my blog. If i knew i was going to do a public showing i might have straightened up better but these pics were to show a friend at work what i was talking about.

Get one with the parachute material. Not net, and no spreader bars. If you have a medical condition, consult with your doc for sure.

I think the canvas hammocks are the best. Give me a nice tight cotton canvas over synthetic parachute fabric any day.
I also think hammock sleeping is poorly understood by most and hugely underrated. I still greatly prefer a bed, though, but I salute you for finding what works for you.

I’m also a hammock sleeper! I originally did it as a temporary solution, my mattress was causing me insane back pain but I wasn’t ready to shell out a few hundred bucks on a new one.
Started with a cheap hammock stand and the first few nights were rough, but when I got the hang (ha) of it I realized I was waking up with 0 back pain and upgraded to a permanent wall installation. I do plan on having a bed again at some point just to have the option (I miss sitting in bed and reading, it’s just not the same in a hammock or a chair) but I don’t think I’ll ever go back to sleeping in a bed full time.
Probably the most interesting part of hammock sleep for me is instead of flailing around in my sleep like I’m fighting demons I usually wake up in the exact same position I fell asleep in, and I have way fewer sleep paralysis episodes.
Also it’s nice being able to toss the whole thing in the wash. And no fear of bedbugs!

And my stuffed animals wouldn’t be nearly as comfortable either

It’s not a big expense but the best way to try sleeping in a hammock is outside a few times on camping trips or in your garden. For that I recommend one with a mosquite net. I suggest to try then decide, jumping right into buying a frame or drilling bolts into walls could be a hassle.
Hang height, hammock length and even your body weight matters. There are hammock calculators online to help you.
Hammock frames often limit these, so make sure to get the right one if you can’t hang them on your wall. If you can, use heavy-duty or swing bolts for anchors.

The dog left a smell on my bed and even though I washed my sheets I’m not too fond of laying where the dog used to be. I’m considering getting a futon, or one of those human sized dog beds

I have several hammocks. A couple of canvas ones, one is kind of narrow and cost about $20 at walmart. I have an ENO one but i’ve been using the canvas one since summer because it breathes better than the nylon kind. Nylon worked well last winter with an oscillating space heater on my back but i haven’t switched back yet this winter.

Don’t waste your money on expensive hammocks, it’s a scam like luxury mattresses. Get one with simple parachute material, they’re cheap.

Do you only use the nylon kind? I’ve found the canvas ones work well for me much of the time, but adjusting sheet/blanket under me is a little difficult. There is definitely some dog-in-their-bed kind of adjustments at first but once i get settled, i’m set for the night.

Slept in a Mayan style Hammock for 2 years. Downsides… if on a stand, takes up a lot of space, cheaper than a good mattress, and I have not figured out how to wash it 😜. Ended up needing knee surgery and had to get a mattress, Dr’s orders. I also consistently had cold butt unless space heater was pointed there.

So I generally disagree, but there was a time I did prefer it. I was in the DR in an apartment with no AC, and a net hammock with a fan was MUCH more comfortable than a bed. The fan above and the net below definitely kept my temperature more regulated. I did still have a pillow and a sheet though. Nowadays, I prefer a bed with a weighted blanket.

Huh, that’s an interesting idea. I’m a side sleeper and have really been struggling with minimizing pain lately. I’ve recently come to realize that my side sleeping is pinching my sciatic nerve and causing pain and numbness all down my leg. I’ve tried adding a lumbar pillow under my waist which helps a ton by keeping my back straight but it is just getting to the point where it is too complicated needing 4 or five pillows to sleep.
Which hammock do you use? How do you suspend it in your room? I would be worried about the curve of it overextending my knees causing pain (which happens when I try to sleep on my back). How do you prevent that?

I don’t know when you last set up a bed frame but I assure you it’s a lot less work than properly setting up a hammock. You don’t need a calculator for a bed, you just assemble it and it’s at the right height unless your hand making a bed I guess.
Anyways upvote for the unpopular, I hold nothing against the tree sleepers tho I’ve met plenty nice people who live the hammock life on hiking trips and camping festivals.

I guess I’m the next level down from OP’s level of hammock dedication.
If I’m at a house with a hammock, you know where I’ll be. I even found out the gate code for an apartment complex by my house, solely because they have a bunch of hammocks (like 12) with a big screen where you can watch a movie. Unfortunately, it started raining and I had to leave and then I forgot the code.

Occasionally I’ll use a sleeping pad but not too often. It’s depressing to have people shame me for it like top comment. Its just more comfortable for me and better for my sleep health and physical health. I don’t understand why I’m treated like a weirdo for it.

I’ve slept in hammocks many times but I can never find a position where I’m comfortable all night, so I always end up walking up a couple times to shift.

But if I bend my knees sometime else always starts to bother me, usually the pressure on my heels.

I’m definitely a convert to hammock life for camping & backpacking. It is so much more comfortable than sleeping on the ground, and once you figure out your setup it is really quite wonderful. But at home I’ll still take a nice comfy mattress…

I’ve been sleeping in hammock full time 4 years now. Started in a crysalis hammock in a tripod which is portable to sleeping elsewhere.
I got a second hand college dorm style loft for if I want to sleep flat or cuddle but I also have an extra futon pad for certain tims with a sweetie.
I attach my hammock between two bolt eyes in opposite sides of my room and I have a couple to choose from. The crysalis hammock hangs in the corner for when I want something like a chair. I also hardly ever wake up with lowe back pain and rocking to sleep is the best.
I use a small jersey blanket bunched up as a pillow that I can shape as needed.

I slept in a sleeping bag on top of my bed for years as a kid instead of using sheets

The last year I lived at my parents’ house college age, i slept in a sleeping bag on the floor next to my bed. That was 40+ years ago. In my 60s now and I love my hammock sleeping.

they’re not that expensive if you go to, say, walmart, but the cheap ones tend to be a bit narrow.

Well this is certainly an unpopular opinion. So unpopular that you don’t deserve to have any more opinions

I slept in a hammock for about a year during my divorce. I only switched back to a bed when I started dating again and needed to not be that guy. To be completely open, it is remarkably good sleep.

I like sleeping on half deflated air mattresses.

I hate air mattresses, no air mattress has failed to leave me with my ass on the ground by the end of the camping trip.

No backs are alike. I love a nap in a hammock but if I actually sleep in one I’ll be on my hands and knees in the morning.

Long story but I slept in a hammock for a while and it definitely wasn’t bad. My back would get cold though since I didn’t have a sleeping bag and my blanket wouldn’t stay under me. 7/10 would recommend if you’re low on cash and need something to sleep on.

I have found that a fitted flannel sheet, put one cormer over my head like a hoodie, wrap myself in the rest works well.

Well fuck. The only good nights of sleep I’ve had while camping are sleeping in a hammock. I regularly struggle with sleeping in the “real world”. Maybe I should have learned from my camping experience and installed a hammock above my side of the bed.

We love sleeping in our hammocks when camping. Love looking at the stars and it really does feel good on the back!

Don’t you mean “two birds, two stones” since you are adding a piece of furniture that could be provided by one piece of furniture?

Slept in hammocks a lot when I was in the army. Especially on outdoor mission exercises. Had always loved it. Swinging in the breeze feeling warm and comfy. Maybe I should find out how to setup one in my apartment too.

This person NEVER sleeps with a partner. A king mattress is literally the only solution for that “problem”. Sorry OP, but you should definitely continue to be who you are.

at a certain age, being comfortable every night is more important. I’m in my 60s. I still get lucky and bought a futon pad with a sheet for those nights. It stays off to the side the rest of the time. I don’t live with a partner any more, and I’m not sure how i would handle that, but for sleeping alone this is very comfortable.

I would have to set up something industrial to take my fat ass. That and I rent so I’m not hooking it into the studs in the wall. So for me, that $10 would quickly multiply. That and because I’m fat, I can’t imagine getting into and out of the hammock would ever go smoothly. Hard pass.
