How I met Laura...

Since I’m telling stories about how I meet my friends… Here’s how I met Laura….

She works as the Security Supervisor at the place I used to work. The person who sits at the front desk, greets visitors, issues temporary badges for people who have lost or forgotten theirs. Takes pictures of new hires for their badge. Occasionally takes a walk around the premises to be sure that nothing unusual is happening like a fire or whatever. They have these dots all over the building where she has to use a little widget that shows she was there. Lots of camera feeds to watch. o THIS NEEDS TO BE REWORKED

I noticed once as I passed in the hallway that she wore a particular kind of jewelry: A silver hammer on a chain. Among the folks I know, we have a thing we call a “jewelry check”. This is something we do when we meet people. Often the jewelry that someone wears can tell you about their beliefs, affinities, etc. You are certainly familiar with the idea - sure you’ve seen people who wear a little (or not so little) cross of silver, gold, etc around their necks, and you can infer from that that they have some affinity to Christianity. It’s not 100%, just because someone wears a cross, they don’t necessarily go to church, but it’s a possibility. Also, it doesn’t really tell you much about what church someone is interested in. The Roman Catholic Church, oa Lutheran church, or any of a myriad other subsets. The reason for doing a jewelry check is that people in some of these groups might small, and sometimes they are, to some extent on the fringe, but the jewelry helps to create a sense of cohesion between the people who wear them.

A hammer pendant can indicate a few things. Some people like the movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and its association with Thor. These kinds of folks don’t necessarily follow any particular path, they just think the hammer is interesting. Someone like this is as likely as not to call it Thor’s Hammer. Nothing wrong with that, but not something I am interested in.

or maybe they practice or believe in certain northern European things. In my experience these folks might describe themselves as Heathens, and maybe practice Asatru. I’ve known a number of people who follow this path, and I’ve especially found more of them in the last 10-15 years. There are some further questions to ask, as I’ll mention in a moment.

You don’t kst
