About the Pressure cooker
- Before using your pressure cooker, give the bits a once over:
- Be sure that the rubber ring is intact, no cracks. If you find any, replace
- Check the pressure release valves. Be sure the rubber one can move freely.
- Make sure that the metal one that pops up is screwed together
tightly. They can work themselves loose.
You can end up with a projectile and a cloud of steam that can cause injury. - if you have a pressure gauge, make sure it’s screwed all the way in. No wrenches or pliers.
- While the pressure cooker is under pressure, don’t mess with the
things:
- don’t jiggle the pressure rocker (the rattly quart)
- that said, the metal lock can leak water for a bit as it starts to pressurize. If you have some water leaking out and it seems to have a hard time making a seak. hold it down for a few seconds with a fork or knife, then release it, it will pop up and the pressurization will begin.
- Don’t press on the rubber safety valve. It can get pushed in and suddenly there is a stream of steam coming at you
- Don’t put too much or too little water in the bottom. 2-3 quarts should be enough
- Don’t be in a hurry to let the pressure off. Take it off the heat and let it cool by itself.
- When the metal thing pops back in, the pressure inside and outside is even and you can open it. There will be steam coming out, don’t get that in your face.
Turn the heat to high, When the regulator starts to rattle, set your timer.
Pressure cook 15-30 min at 15# (usually the highest pressure). Set the timer after it starts to rattle. When this happens, turn the heat down a bit, but it should rattle pretty regularly during the pressure cycle.
Using brown rice
This part is untested by me.
Boil water to a rolling boil and add the brown rice to it and drop flame to medium heat for 9 minutes stirring every now and then, then remove from the heat and strain, I rinse in cold water to stop from cooking and rinse starch off. I use a mesh sieve that fit the pot I use, turn upside down and drain off the water I leave in the sink draining upside down for @ 20 minutes and give it a few shakes. Then straight into jars. Pressure cook for @ 1.5 hrs at 15
Matt Barry this is what I do I’ve been trying to find a no soak no simmer way. Tried last night and just made a solid block couldn’t shake once PC lol. You get many bursty grains. My last run I got a lot made 18 jars and thinking of redoing them. Rice can be a pain but I believe it’s King!
Since your already using brown rice, have you tried the brown rice flower tek? Gppy rind up the brown rice mix in vermiculite and water. Once it cakes, put it into fruiting conditions. I use corn for my big bins but the BRF cakes are a fill in between big bin flushes. I give them away to friends for fun and they compete on mushroom size and flush weight. (They don’t want to commit to the hobby).
