USB drive not recognized

October 11, 2026

To fix a USB drive that is not recognized in Ubuntu 24.04, use the following diagnostic and troubleshooting steps.

  1. Check if the System Detects the USB Hardware

Run the following terminal command immediately after plugging in the USB drive to see real-time kernel messages: bash sudo dmesg -w Use code with caution. To view all connected USB devices at the hardware level, run: bash lsusb Use code with caution.

  1. Fix NTFS Filesystem Recognition Issues (Common in Ubuntu 24.04)

Ubuntu 24.04 introduced a newer ntfs3 kernel module that frequently fails to automatically mount or recognize external NTFS-formatted drives. You can blacklist ntfs3 to force the system back to the older, more reliable driver: 1. Open your terminal and create a blacklist configuration file:

echo 'blacklist ntfs3' | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/disable-ntfs3.conf

Use code with caution. 2. Reboot your computer:bash

sudo reboot
Use code with caution.
(To undo this change later, simply delete /etc/modprobe.d/disable-ntfs3.conf).
Alternatively, you can manually install the legacy driver package:
``` bash
sudo apt update
sudo apt install ntfs-3g
Use code with caution.
  1. Manually Mount via the Disks Utility or File Manager
If the drive shows up in lsusb or system logs but does not auto-mount: • Open the built-in Disks application from the Ubuntu app menu. • Select your USB drive from the left panel. • Click the Play (Mount) button under the partition diagram. • Or, open the Files manager to see if the volume appears in the sidebar. If the drive still does not appear, let me know: • What output do you see when you run lsusb or sudo dmesg -w? • What filesystem format is the USB drive (NTFS, FAT32, exFAT, ext4)?
