hobbit hole house
I know a little bit about this house. It was built in the late 1980s. It consists of 4 concrete domes covered in dirt. When it was first built, from the road you could just see a small structure about the size of a gas kiosk at the grocery store. Inside, there is a staircase that goes down to the main level.
The windows all face south, of course. The pictures in this article show that someone redid all of the fittings to a little more upscale.
There used to be a small pond to the southwest which was stocked with catfish. I fed them, and at one point fished some out with a laundry basket. Catfish are kind of difficult to clean, with sharp barbs in the dorsal fin.
Back then, there were also cows nearby. I brought a skull back to Michigan and it was part of my porch decoration, on a stick. I am sure my neighbors though that was a little odd.
The house had been a dream of my mother-in-law for a long time; unfortunately she didn’t get to live in it for very long before she passed.
The story that goes along with the real estate listing says that it was built by “a family of engineers”. Not entirely inaccurate, i suppose, as the dad had been an engineer for the phone company.
