Reassembly
Ejector
Apply a small amount of lube around the EJECTOR to form a small puddle.
Place a FIRED OR INERT CASE under the lip of the
EXTRACTOR.
With a rocking motion, press the case down against the
Ejector to depress the Ejector
Spring.
Press on the case until it stops against the bolt
face.
Ease off with your thumb slightly and press down again.
Repeat several times while adding another small amount of lube.
Once the spring action of the Ejector is smooth and strong, dry off any excess lubricant.
Wipe down the entire BOLT CARRIER ASSEMBLY and
CHARGING HANDLE.
Apply a generous amount of lube on the slide
rail areas of the BOLT CARRIER KEY
where they contact the inside of the RECEIVER.
Lower Receiver
Wipe down the BOLT BUFFER and ACTION SPRING ASSEMBLIES.
Apply a small amount of lube directly on the: - TAKEDOWN PIN - PIVOT PIN
Use a hypodermic tip or narrow funnel tip applicator to apply a small amount of lube directly to: - HAMMER PIN - TRIGGER PIN - Front face of the HAMMER
The Once-Over
Apply a small amount of lube to the: - FRONT SIGHT - REAR SIGHT ASSEMBLY - MAGAZINE CATCH - BOLT CATCH ASSEMBLY - SAFETY LEVER - EJECTION PORT COVER SPRING and DETENT - FORWARD ASSIST (if present)
Reassembly Tips & Checklist
Most of the AR-15’s reassembly is the reverse of the
disassembly.
The following are tips / checklist to guide you through the process.
Upper Assembly
Ejection Port Cover
Review the image on Page 7.
Start the “C” ring side of the pin through the
left side of the port mount
and the left end of the Cover.
Slide the Spring into position with the longer leg
pointing upward on the right side.
Retain the Spring while rotating the right side downward (adding tension
/ winding it)
as you slide the Pin through the tensioned Spring and then through the
right side of the port mount.
Use small needle-nose pliers or your fingers (and plenty of
patience)
to install the EJECTION PORT COVER HINGE PIN SNAP RING “C”
Ring.
Gently tap or press the ring into its groove in the Ejection
Port Cover Pin.
Test to make sure the cover moves freely.
Bolt Assembly
- Place the EXTRACTOR SPRING (and INSERT if present) inside its recessed area in the Bolt, with the large end in first.
- Insert the EXTRACTOR into position and secure it in a padded vice.
- Install the EXTRACTOR PIN.
- Insert the Ejector Spring into its hole in the BOLT FACE.
- Insert the Ejector and align the clearance cut with the Ejector Pin Hole.
- Use a punch to push down on the Ejector and hold while inserting a second punch from the side of the Bolt to align and retain the Ejector in position.
- Remove the initial punch and install the EJECTOR ROLL PIN, which will drift out the other punch.
Final Bolt Carrier Reassembly
- Insert the BOLT ASSEMBLY into the BOLT CARRIER ASSEMBLY with the EXTRACTOR facing right.
- Align the Cam Pin Hole in the bolt with the Cam Pin Slot in the Bolt Carrier.
- Install the CAM PIN with the top lug lengthwise to align with the Bolt Carrier.
- Once seated, rotate it 90 degrees. Confirm that the Cam Pin and Bolt move together.
- Insert the FIRING PIN and install the FIRING PIN RETAINER PIN into the left of the Bolt Carrier Assembly.
- Gently confirm that the Firing Pin is secure.
⚠️ WARNING: Be sure that the CAM PIN is installed in the BOLT CARRIER ASSEMBLY.
If it isn’t, your rifle can still fire and will explode!
Pull the BOLT out as far as it will go from the
BOLT CARRIER ASSEMBLY.
If the BOLT is pushed into the Assembly — even just a pinch — it
will not enter the UPPER RECEIVER.
With the RECEIVER inverted (up-side down), slide the
CHARGING HANDLE
into the Upper Receiver until it drops down into its track inside the
Receiver.
Push the Charging Handle and Bolt Carrier
Assembly into the Receiver together
until they lock into position.
Lower Assembly
TRIGGER GUARD ASSEMBLY (be sure to support the
ears!),
PISTOL GRIP and SAFETY ASSEMBLIES,
MAGAZINE RELEASE,
and BOLT STOP ASSEMBLY procedures are the
reverse order of disassembly.
Here’s the proper orientation of the HAMMER and TRIGGER ASSEMBLIES.
Notice the use of a Slave Pin to capture the DISCONNECTOR and its SPRING inside the TRIGGER.
Lower Receiver Reassembly
- Support the LOWER RECEIVER in an Action Block.
TIP: Review the TRIGGER and HAMMER ASSEMBLY images on pages 14 and 23.
- The TRIGGER and HAMMER PINS are
identical.
The non-grooved end should go in first.
(Some pins have 3 grooves, as shown on page 14.)
Install the large end of the DISCONNECTOR SPRING
into the recessed hole in the top rear of the TRIGGER.Install the DISCONNECTOR with the hook facing forward.
Use a Slave Pin (see page 23) or a punch through the side of the RECEIVER
to align the parts during reassembly.Install the TRIGGER ASSEMBLY and TRIGGER PIN.
Test the Disconnector to confirm that it moves freely.Install the HAMMER ASSEMBLY and HAMMER PIN.
The legs of the HAMMER SPRING should rest on the Trigger Pin.
Use a punch through the side of the RECEIVER to help align the Hammer
while guiding the Hammer Pin through both sides of the Receiver.Confirm that both Pins are flush with the left and right side of the Lower Receiver.
⚠️ While testing the Trigger Assembly, DO NOT allow the HAMMER to strike the RECEIVER!
Use a Hammer Drop Block or thick folded cloth to buffer the impact.
Final Assembly
WARNING: The SAFETY LEVER should be on “SAFE” before closing the UPPER RECEIVER.
- Mate the Upper and Lower Assemblies together.
- Install the FRONT PIVOT PIN (and cap screw if required).
- Install the rear TAKEDOWN PIN.
